The Attridge Academy of Irish Dance

Our Story

The Attridge Academy of Irish Dance is the longest established Irish dance group in Cork city, Ireland.

It was originally founded in 1958 by Nancy Murphy-Attridge, and today is still directed by Nancy, who is now in partnership with her daughter Niamhmarie Murphy Gómez.

What consisted then of just 8 dancers performing at the local Cork Choral & Folk Dance Festival, has since grown beyond all expectations and is now a dance academy known worldwide.

The Attridge Academy of Irish Dance is a non-competitive dance group, whose aim is to promote and foster our Irish culture both at home and abroad.

At home – to educate our young students and to pass on the tradition of our Irish dances, whilst also offering authentic, traditional and innovative entertainment to the numerous visitors to our city and country.

And abroad – to exhibit our Irish culture to the highest possible standard and also to exchange cultural links with other countries.

We are very proud to be associated and teaching in many primary schools throughout Cork city. In these schools, Irish dancing is regarded as part of the school curriculum, and each student gets the opportunity to learn the steps and céilí dances of our Irish culture.

Many students enjoy their “rince” time so much in school, that they often join a private class after school hours. Here the dancers achieve the highest standards possible. They learn to appreciate their rich culture and eventually, when they are older, they also get the opportunity to travel and perform with their dancing.

Along with our primary school and extra curricular classes, the Attridge Academy also caters for senior classes, at advanced levels.

Experienced dancers are also offered places in performance classes, where they may become part of our dance troupe performing at various events, festivals, corporate functions and weddings.

Please Note: For all classes, advanced booking is advisable, as most classes have waiting lists.

The senior and performance troupe of the Attridge Academy of Irish Dance regularly travel throughout Ireland and internationally, to perform at cultural events, arts festivals, carnivals, dance performances, and various other shows.

1961 saw the Attridge Dance Group travel abroad for the first time. They attended a Folk Dance Festival in Helendorn, Holland. Such is their popularity with international audiences, that they are now invited all over the world to perform at various festivals and shows on a yearly basis.
